In his book You Are the Placebo, Dr Joe Dispenza takes us on a journey from self-discovery to self-empowerment.
The placebo effect is a well-known phenomenon that attributes changes in our bodies to our expectations. So remarkable is this phenomenon, that it can even cure us of illness. A book by Dr Joe Dispenza called You Are the Placebo explores this effect in more detail, explaining what it is and how we can use it to improve our lives.
The book begins with an open and moving account of an accident that forced Joe to practise the methods he believed in theory. Being left with a shattered spine from a road collision (Joe was on a bicycle when he was hit by a car) and unable to move, he had nothing to do except try to repair his bones. Over the course of 9 weeks Dr Joe Dispenza dedicated his days to healing his spine one vertebrate at a time. Within just a few months he was on his feet again despite doctors telling him his walking days were over. It was his own healing that has inspired his work on the role the mind plays in creating and healing illness.
The underlying message from You Are the Placebo is that if we can change our internal state we will see a change in our external reality. By becoming conscious of what we are thinking and feeling we can exert the kind of control over our thoughts that will allow us to create the life of our dreams. If we could only begin to work on ourselves by actively overriding negative thoughts and emotional states, we could change the reoccurring processes within our bodies that keep us locked in experiencing damaging patterns of behaviour.
To make these changes the book ends with a comprehensive meditation process. This meditation exercise guides us through our different brain wave states so that we reach our subconscious mind: the part of our brain where true change happens. Accessing this part of our brain in order to give it different signals is what will enable us to change the damaging thoughts and states of being that we experience.
The basis of book is firmly rooted in scientific research and Dispenza mentions numerous case studies that seem to prove the important influence our minds have over our bodies. From research on the effects of voodoo to studies examining the reversal of aging, the book makes it clear that when it comes to our bodies and our lives what we believe really does come true.
You Are the Placebo explores just how much of an effect our thinking patterns have on our body. From neuroscientist to basic knowledge of high-school biology, You Are the Placebo offers an accessible insight for everyone into just how powerful we really are.
