The very nature of being human means that there will be days when we feel a little under the weather, or that life just isn’t going our way. Sometimes, when it feels like life doesn’t have our back the best thing that we can do for ourselves is to take a little time to let all of our emotions out. By releasing our hurt, anger or sadness we can clear any obstacles that might be standing in the way of being happy again.
Although feeling happy again after a set-back can be easier said than done, getting our positive vibes back is exactly what we need to do so that we can start vibrating in harmony with the universe once more, and here’s a few tips on how to do just that!
It may sound like the last thing you want to do, but feeling down is the perfect time to practise loving yourself. Try reciting affirmations such as I approve of myself to help find an inner peace amidst the turmoil. This Louise Hay affirmation is perfect for times when you feel over critical of yourself or criticised by other people.
Regardless of what situation you find yourself in there is always someone we hold responsible for putting us there. We may feel a friend or colleague has wronged us, or that we have been mistreated by a company we put our trust in. Many times we direct the blame at ourselves, insisting that we should have known better. By holding on to this resentment we stop ourselves from finding happiness so the kindest thing we can do for ourselves is to release it. There are a number of ways to do this: try practising a loving kindness meditation or visualise the person you resent receiving happiness and abundance – especially if that person is you.
It’s true that we obsess over things when they go wrong. We question why they went wrong, why they had to happen to us and when, if ever, they will get better. Going over our problems so many times often makes them seem much worse than they actually are. Meditation is the perfect way to calm this. At first, you may notice your thoughts aggressively forcing their way to the front of your mind, but the more you allow them to pass the quieter they will become. Practising meditation, especially in times of hardship or sorrow, is the perfect way to calm your mind and relax your body.
Do What Makes You Happy
Let’s not forget that life is to be enjoyed, so when things are looking bleak make a deliberate effort to enjoy yourself. It’s ok to step back, take time out and rejuvenate. So, whether you love to write, make music, watch a certain programme or knit jumpers, look after your wellbeing and allow yourself to enjoy your favourite activity. Readdressing your emotional state could be just what you need in order to change your outlook on the problem.
If all else fails, smile! By smiling, even if you force it at first, you immediately lift your spirts. Sometimes the simplest thing can make the biggest difference and given that it takes such little effort, smiling is always worth a try. So, next time it feels like it’s you vs the world a simple smile could be all you need to get back on track!
